Judy in Concert, Forest Hills,
New York
July 17, 1965
I have never have seen a
picture of Judy at the Forest Hills concert of 7/17/65. I was 18 years
old and it was the most exciting experience of my life. Rain threatened
all day and I was a nervous wreck. It actually rained during the first
half of the show and Judy was getting soaked. Her last song prior to intermission,
as I remember it, was When You're Smiling. When she came to the middle
of the song, instead of singing "Forget it all, have a ball" she sang "let
it rain, let it pour, forget your troubles and just get happy". I thought
I would go crazy!
She was in great voice that
night and even though she did not command full houses that summer like
Frank Sinatra and Streisand, her fans stayed till one hour after the concert
screaming her name in unison. I even met an old Jewish woman who told me
that her grandson's Bar Mitzvah had to be postponed because of Judy's appearance
that night. That was the effect that Judy had on sensitive, artistic people.
She really was not for the masses. I truly believe this. Seeing the photo
on your website brought back these memories that are somehow buried beneath
other memories. Thank you.
When she sang "As Long As
He Needs Me" and "By Myself", she actually came down from the stage onto
the wet field to perform. This was the greatest moment of many years of
theatre going.
