- War Memorial -
Judy Pours Forth: 5,500
Enthralled
By Jean Walrath, Rochester
Times-Union
Judy Garland drew them out
of their seats, up to the edge of the stage and over the rainbow with her
last night as she closed her 2 1/2 hour show at the War Memorial.
It was a crowd of 5,500 --
short of the SRO audiences that have greeted her in cities across the land,
but none the less responsive. Caught up in the sparkling current of the
singer's glow power, the audience with wild applause for such numbers as
"The Trolley Song," "San Francisco," "For Me and My Gal" and a soft blue
rendering of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love."
She sang them cool and hot,
lobbed some of them out over the footlights like Roger Maris, kicked up
a few seconds of rock n' roll, poured out lovely melody, and shook out
a bit of jazz.
"Over the Rainbow" was the
good-night song, sung after part of the audience surged up to the footlights
with outstretched hands. She shook hands all along the front row, and then,
after yielding to the pleas for "Rainbow" she fled to the wings. The crowd,
however waited hopefully. It's clear the fans would have stayed all night,
but Judy flew out on a midnight plane.

The famous "zing" girl -- "zing
went the strings of my heart" -- bounced out at the beginning of the evening
in a black dress with a red satin jacket and wound up the evening in a
pair of black slacks with a sequined jacket, the better to dance up and
down the stage and jump.
