Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PIONEER ENTERTAINMENT proudly
presents “THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW, VOLUME 2”

Long Beach, CA (July 25th
1999) -- Pioneer Entertainment will release on September 7th, two complete
episodes of “THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW” on DVD -- that have never been released
on any format -- with her guests MEL TORME and COUNT BASIE, and LENA HORNE
and TERRY-THOMAS.
These early segments from
Garland’s 1963-64 CBS-TV series showcase the superstar with two kings and
a queen from the world of jazz : longtime friends Horne, Basie, along with
the man who was in charge of “Special Musical Material” for this TV series
: the “Velvet Fog” himself, the recently deceased Torme.
The program with Torme and
Basie was only the second episode taped for Garland’s highly anticipated
multimillion dollar series. Singing songs such as “April In Paris,” “I’ve
Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,” and a medley of “I Hear Music / The Sweetest
Sounds / Strike Up The Band,” Judy proves in these duets she could sing
“cool” jazz just as well as the two giants in the field. You’ll also get
to see the only solo dance number she performed on the entire 26-episode
series, “Soul Bossa Nova” -- which is currently heard in the movie “Austin
Powers : The Spy Who Shagged Me.” Garland’s trademark way with show tunes
and ballads are equally well represented here, as she makes both “Hey,
Look Me Over” and the devastatingly heartbreaking “A Cottage For Sale”
her own.
Another star with strong
jazz ties joins Judy on Show #4 : the eternally youthful and still popular
legend Lena Horne teams with Garland on a Latin-tinged “Day In, Day Out,”
and in a mamouth medley, they trade places, each singing some of the other’s
trademark songs, including “Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart,” “Honeysuckle
Rose,” and “Meet Me In St. Louis.” Two other series segments which showcased
Judy’s unworldly wit made their “JGS” debut on this episode : the famous
“Tea For Two” slot has her chatting hilariously with the beloved British
comedian and actor, Terry Thomas; and the equally well known “Born In A
Trunk” closer featured Judy’s first series show-biz yarn, as she tells
about losing the Oscar to Grace Kelly, which leads into her most intimate
rendition of the Garland standard “The Man That Got Away.”
Not widely seen since their
original broadcast over 35 years ago, these two episodes are making their
home video debut -- on DVD. Including informative liner notes and RARE
OUTTAKES NEVER AIRED, the programs have been digitally remastered and restored
from the original 2-inch videotapes, and are presented in both the original
mono and newly created 5.1 surround tracks. You will have the feeling you’re
in Studio 43 at CBS Television City in Hollywood for the legendary series
known as “The Show That Got Away.”
These 26 episodes presented
“the legend” with OTHER legends, including Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Donald
O’Connor, Ethel Merman, and Bobby Darin, among others. VOLUME ONE of “The
Judy Garland Show” -- featuring Guests MICKEY ROONEY and LIZA MINNELLI
-- was released by Pioneer
Artists on June 15
1999 to wide acclaim -- including raves from LIZ SMITH, who said “ the
NEWS about Judy is the dazzling DVDs of her TV series. These remastered
Surround Sound releases from Pioneer are so crisp and clear.” Look for
a deluxe multi-disc DVD box set from Pioneer Entertainment -- "THE JUDY
GARLAND SHOW COLLECTION" -- in October.
