I've always been a huge fan of the Wizard of Oz and the Ruby Slippers held a magical fascination for me, but it wasn't until the
book The Ruby Slippers of Oz by Rhys Thomas came out in 1989 that I thought of making a pair myself.

I wanted my pair to have the correct shape, but it wasn't until I worked at a theatre that was getting rid of it's costume stock that I found authentic 30's/40's pumps but I had to take two shoes, one pair with the correct body shape and another pair with the correct heel shape. I pried off the heels of one pair and nailed them to the other pair and finally had the shape I desired. I still haven't been able to find another pair that comes close to the original shape. I think my shoes most closely resemble the shape and look of "The Witch's Shoes" now owned by Philip Samuels.

So I went out to the fashion district in New York and found acceptable sequins and real glass rhinestones and bugle beads. My only problems were that I didn't realize that the shoes were a size 8 instead of a 5/6. So even though my bows are the actual size, they look smaller on a larger pair of shoes and I couldn't tell from the black and white pictures in the book that the rhinestones on the bow had silver settings on them. But other than that, they were constructed to the specifications in the blueprint included in the book by Tod Machin (look for my scan of the blueprint elsewhere on this site) except that I used milliner's glue to attach the sequins instead of sewing them to a silk georgette and sewing that to the pumps. So until I find the perfect pair of authentic vintage shoes with a 2in. heel, these will do.

I hope you enjoy  the ruby slipper site and that it inspires you to make your own pair!
